The Lourdes school is an open-door centre, willing to offer the same opportunities to all the students, also diverse and vulnerable ones. In a challenging social and economic context, and despite many difficulties, we have been there for more than 60 years training children and young people because we are convinced that education is one of the main pillars of a life with more opportunities. We are the Lourdes School
We are an inclusive centre teaching students at all the educational stages, from pre-school (3-6 years old) to high school. Our educative project is based on innovation and academic quality, the improvement of capacities, personal autonomy and creativity.
The centre belongs to FUHEM, a Spanish non-profit organization. In the 1960s, the building was constructed close to houses for workers. Despite this humble origin, the Lourdes school was one of the first designs of Sáenz de Oiza, one of the highest references for Spanish architecture.
Since then, we have trained thousands of children and young people who, thanks to genuinely involved professionals and a school community working like a larger family, can reach their goals. Our students learn and obtain good academic results. But also, they display solidarity and participate in projects to improve their social and environmental contexts. They can overcome their personal and familiar conditions, being creative, and offering all their potential through the plastic arts and music.
A centre diverse and solidary with difficulties
After some decades overcoming diverse difficult moments, currently the school is confronted by circumstances that, in their concurrency and complexity, take on greater magnitude. On one hand, the neighbourhood in which it is located is a low-income aging area in the urban context of Madrid. The direct consequence is that there are difficulties to completely cover the offered places and to obtain the familiar economic support for the school of their children.
But on the other hand, the school has gained reputation as a barrierless centre. In fact, in the school year 2023/2024, around 34 % of vulnerable students accounted have achieved integration and success levels probably not accessible in other centres. The school requires specific educational support because it gets students with different kind of disabilities (i.e., physical, sensory, intellectual and psychosocial) into formal education, and, at the same time, it has a program designed to high-capacity students. Furthermore, students with complex familiar contexts are integrated in the school community too.
In the last years, we have received PROA+ and New Generation funds, an essential aid whose continuity is currently uncertain.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
What do we need to continue including everyone?
- Economic support to the families so that they would be able to afford the scholar needs of their children, as well as other scholar reinforcement and support activities; electronic devices and internet access; scholar trips, pedagogical and student conviviality activities. This item amounts to 136,290 euros.
- Dining scholarships in order to allow the students whose families lack of economic resources to access the dining services offered by the school (breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack). These services are offered in the context of the project on healthy and sustainable food “Alimentando otros modelos” (“Feeding other models”). This item amounts to 128,040 euros.
- Additional funds devoted to diversity outreach, so that the centre could count with the support of job and social mentors, teams for facilitation and psycho-pedagogical counsellors. This item amounts to 139,690 euros.
The school will use a total amount of 404,012.52 euros devoted to these tasks in the school year 2024/2025.
